Composites are widely used in technology to provide a high strength, low weight material. Recently the fracture behavior of metal matrix composites (MMCs) has been of interest. MMCs are composites formed by embedding reinforcement fibers in a matrix and are not homogeneous along the fiber direction. This study investigated the effect of pore structure on the fracture mechanics and microstructure of MMCs. Fracture occurred along the matrix fibers (and occasionally through them) in MMCs composed of a fully embedded steel fiber in a cast iron matrix. The fracture behavior was found to depend on the pore structure of the composite. In homogeneous composites, fracture occurred along the embedded fibers. In pore-rich composites, fracture also occurred along the matrix fibers. Even though the matrix had relatively brittle fracture properties, matrix fibers were strong enough to transmit loads and decrease the fracture toughness. Pore size was controlled by the initial carbon particle size.A California man's case against a police officer who allegedly ran him down and left him with a horrific broken arm is now making its way through the courts, after a state appeals court ruled Tuesday that an early dismissal of the civil suit was improper. The case stems from a police pursuit that began when the driver allegedly slammed a roundabout, crossed traffic and hit a tree, the Associated Press reported. "As I was driving, I couldn't figure out what they were driving at and why they were pulling me over," the driver later told authorities. "They had their lights and sirens on, so I was scared." He went on to tell investigators that he followed the police car to a "little intersection" and "just as I had the car coming to a stop, the officer began driving over the curb and into my side. The officer, whose name was redacted in court records, told investigators he feared for the safety of his fellow officers if the suspect continued to drive off. He is said to have given the driver a ticket and sent him on his way. "As he was driving off, he hit my whole side of the car and the next thing I knew, I was on the ground. He started running and he was trying to put his foot on me," the driver said. "It hurt really bad." But the driver's right-hand limp persisted, as a dark bruise can be seen in a police report obtained by The Christian Science Monitor via Californias Court of Appeal. The driver, who lives in Orange County, sued the officer and the City of Santa Ana, where the incident happened, alleging excessive force and pain and suffering. His lawsuit was dismissed in 2011. In the decision, the appeals court reviewed testimony from police officers and said the driver's case presented a classic battle between police officers and suspects. The court added that the officer in the case may have been entitled to use force.
