La Boheme: Vocal Score (Ricordi Opera Vocal Score) William

Two featured composers in this issue's column have been reviewed many times in past issues of the Journal of Singing, both scores and recordings. This makes the more recent contributions by American composers Martin Hennessy and Scott Gendel welcome to singers and teachers already familiar with their work. An exciting new contribution by songSLAM, one of the most innovative song series on the landscape today, heralds a series dedicated to truly contemporary creations in the field; none of the songs in this anthology were written before 2016. And one of the world's most venerable publishing houses has created an impressive new opera aria series for all voice types.

La Boheme: Vocal Score (Ricordi Opera Vocal Score) William

By now, American composer Martin Hennessy has garnered numerous accolades for an outstanding oeuvre of vocal music, including duets, quartets, operas, and catalogues of songs for solo voice. Individual cycles reflect Hennessy's deep knowledge of poetry and literature, and include settings of iconic poets Edna St. Vincent Millay, Langston Hughes, Ben Jonson, and W. H. Auden, as well as lesser known poets, such as the poet in this featured cycle, Janet Kaplan. The composer's remarkable sensitivity to text and language reflects a musical and literary education, with his degree in English literature from Columbia University and studies at the Juilliard Opera Center. Hennessy's compositional style also reflects his impressive experience as a collaborative pianist who has performed with exceptional singers, in live performance and recording.
